A Book’s Best Friend

A Book’s Best Friend

I loved the technical and artistic challenge of this project, as it became more about observing rather than photographing a predefined idea, or a portrait with an intricate background or fancy lighting. Over the course of photographing this project (which occurred over a quick hour), I simply let myself float, observing the interaction between child and dog from many different angles and perspectives. Through the course of the time I spent with them, I believe there were many magical moments - and it was my job to be present and in the moment to capture them when they occurred.

Children can benefit physically and emotionally from the unconditional love of a dog. The St. John Ambulance Therapy Animals Involved in Literacy Success Program (TAILS) and the Yellowknife Public Library pair young readers with a specially trained dog to encourage reading. The dogs are great reading companions because they create a relaxed and safe environment. Photographer Dave Brosha captures the magic of this reading relationship.
