You are my sunshine

You are my sunshine

Aven Cottages at the Territorial Dementia Facility has been welcoming two volunteer musicians into its midst for several years. The women play music and sing, connecting on a universal soul level with residents who may otherwise have challenges communicating. As Shakespeare said: "If music be the language of love, play on."

Every day as we drive or walk around this city of ours, we often don't see the random acts of kindness and giving that exist around every turn, behind closed doors and in public, with every facet of society. When I was asked to photograph at the Aven Cottages, I was struck by how such a simple act - an hour of song by two kind-hearted women with a passion for music and giving - could have such an impact to the recipients of their kindness. Being able to document this as a photographer was a powerful experience; stopping to witness and capture simple, pure moments in time.
